"The Maldives is one of the most restricted nations in the world, with fewer than 30 known indigenous believers. Any Maldivian who follows Christ faces imprisonment or expulsion from the country. The Maldivian government seeks to eliminate or greatly minimize outside influences that could affect its citizens’ cultural identity, which includes complete commitment to Islam.
The country’s oppressive anti-Christian government and culture make it one of the world’s most challenging regions for Christian work. Seekers and new converts experience extreme social pressure. Small, close-knit island communities enable the government to maintain tight control over the population. Christian converts have been imprisoned in attempts to pressure them to renounce Christ and return to Islam, and they are usually forced to leave their homes and perhaps even the country." Way to pray: Pray for the few known indigenous believers, who face imprisonment or expulsion if identified as a Christian.
Nathan and Rene Foth have been on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) for more than 15 years and have served on college campuses in East Asia, Sweden, Argentina, and Dominican Republic. They have also served on short-term trips in Central Asia and South Asia. Most recently, the Foths served in Charlotte with Bridges International, an international student ministry on the campus of UNC-Charlotte. As of December 2019, the Foths are serving with international students in Sydney, Australia. They have three daughters: Anabelle, Elianna, and Lillian, whom they consider their secret weapons in welcoming and building relationships with international students from China, India and the Middle East.
Way to Pray: Pray for the Foths as they continue to build relationships with students in Australia. They are currently doing a Thursday discipleship group. Pray for the students in that group to continue to come to the understanding of who Jesus is and the plans He has for their lives. Please also pray for the visa process for them as they continue to work through that.
