Day 18 | The Welcoming Arms of the Father
Written by Missy Schrader
READ
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 NIV
REFLECT
Jesus told the parable of the lost son to show us what God the Father’s heart is like. This verse shows the unexpected and undeserved welcome the Father extends to his child…but I want you to see something so sweet. On this day, men didn’t run. Children ran. Women ran. Look at what the father does. He runs! Tim Keller says about this scene, “The Father is actually acting like a mother!” Look at the expressive, lavish love the Father demonstrates. He throws His arms around his son and kisses him. Can you picture a mother in your life who greeted you like this? I sure can! If you’re a mother, do you love your kids like this?
RESPOND
What does it do to your heart to view God’s tender, unconditional, expressive love like this? The son in Jesus’ story does not deserve the love he receives…and neither do we.“You are more sinful than you could dare imagine, and you are more loved and accepted than you could ever dare to hope.” (Tim Keller) What would it look like if you believed you were loved like this? As we anticipate Jesus’ birth, pray that the Holy Spirit will help you walk with confidence and joy, believing that you are lavishly loved by your Heavenly Father.
