My Rock & Sure Foundation

by Heidi Frey

When I was asked to write something for this spotlight, I felt unqualified. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what God has been teaching me during these last few strange months. I have been caught up in a whirlwind of various emotions daily. After continuing to think and pray about it, I feel the Spirit keeps bringing to mind Matthew 7. Many parallels can easily be drawn from the whole chapter in regards to our current times. Jesus speaks to us about judging others, the “golden rule”, warns of false prophets and what fruits we are producing. However, I keep thinking specifically of verses 24-29, “”Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.””

Two things stuck out to me in these verses. First of all, the rain, winds and floods fell on both houses. My faith is being tested and tried. My heart and mind are often at war. BUT GOD, he does not tremble or move, he is surprised by nothing and he has answers for everything. Because he is my rock, I will not be shaken.

Secondly, the last verse made me wonder. Am I listening to the only true authority in my life or am I listening to worldly scribes who encourage me to build on sand?

In summary, I am a work in progress. I know that as a disciple of Christ I want to reflect my teacher. He is kind, he is gracious, he is generous, he is strong, he is truth and he is light. (To name a few.) All glory to Him. He is my rock and sure foundation.
