SERMON SUMMARY

Scripture: Psalm 51

This part of the story stinks. I wish it wasn’t true. David finally gets to where the anointing has been pointing. He’s not hiding in caves anymore. He is king and blessed in battle. He is unifying Israel into a golden age, and then, an avalanche of decisions and sins that lead into one of the darkest periods of his life. How does David “obey after he has disobeyed?” Why does David not get rejected like Saul?

The answer lies in his confession and repentance.

  • Confession starts with taking responsibility that the greatest problem lies within us.
  • Confession is acknowledging that God is King and he gets to make the rules.

The safest and most blessed place to be is living within the boundaries of God’s kingship over your life. He is wiser than you, and he loves you.

The Lord says: “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.” Many sorrows come to the wicked, but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord. Psalm 32:8-10

Applications:

  • Take your sin seriously. Repentance is a resolve that by God’s grace, you will turn from your sin and turn back to God.
  • Take the cross even more seriously. God’s mercy and grace is the basis for David’s appeal. Our sins have been forgiven past, present, and future! Christ became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God. Confession allows us to draw on heaven’s “bank account” of inexhaustible forgiving grace. The requests of Psalm 51 are answered: our joy restored and our spirits renewed, worship rising up and our lips telling of God’s forgiveness.

“The gospel is only an implicit, untapped power in your life unless and until it’s released in power through repentance. The changes you want, the changes you seek, the changes you need, the secret is repentance.” Tim Keller
