3 Reasons Why Membership Matters

As long as someone has a relationship with God, why is it necessary to have something like church membership? Fellowship Greenville has a lot of guests and regular attendees and are serving new families all across the Upstate every week. We welcome everyone with open arms and would never turn them away, but we truly believe you belong here and are looking for more than just the familiarity of faces seen throughout the year.

Membership is not just a box to check on your church milestones list but a chance to truly belong in community with other believers—to serve God’s people with others with no expectation of return.

We believe there are at least three good reasons to consider membership.

  • Membership is biblical.

Although the word “membership” is not used in the Bible, we find that believers identified themselves with a local community throughout the Scriptures. They gave themselves to a group of other like-minded believers for the common cause of advancing the gospel in their world. Each believer is a member of the Body of Christ and is to live out the Christian life with other believers.

  • Membership is practical.

As Fellowship Greenville grows, it’s important for leadership to be able to identify those who can be counted on to pitch in. We don’t want anyone to feel pressured, but at a practical level, we need to know those who think God has called them to be co-laborers here. These are the ones who genuinely do the work of the ministry at Fellowship Greenville. They are the ones the leadership focuses on when planning for training, equipping, and growth.

  • Membership is personally enriching.

Our society often takes commitment and faithfulness lightly, but the Christian life involves a certain amount of dedication. We encourage everyone to consider backing up their good intentions for growth in the Christian life with some definite and appropriate life decisions. We see membership as a way for a Christian to confirm their commitment to a group of believers in their local area for the purpose of mutual growth.

So, what does membership mean practically?

At Fellowship Greenville, members:

  • Receive the right to vote on matters involving the entire congregation.
  • Hold each other accountable to be faithful stewards of life.
  • Place themselves under the leadership of the elders and pastors to serve the mission of God here and around the world.
  • Support the ministry through their finances, service, and prayers.
  • Participate in corporate and personal worship.
  • Are given preference when it comes to the church’s ministries and services.
  • Are eligible to be staff members, elders, deacons, pastors, and community group leaders.

There are some “minimum requirements” for membership in any church, including Fellowship Greenville. To get started on your journey to becoming a member of our community of grace, head to fellowshipgreenville.org/membership. You belong here, and we can’t wait to meet and serve alongside you.
